Physicians specialising in child physical abuse or neglect are paediatricians whose particular responsibility is child protection.

Some doctors offering general forensic work also work in this sub-specialty. They offer care and examination for children at the request of the police or other authorities who suspect a child may be a victim of physical abuse or neglect. This may occur, for example, where a child fails to thrive, or has an injury whose cause may not be accidental. The doctor examines the child, documents the findings, recovers relevant forensic samples, prepares a report and arranges any necessary aftercare.
