Marks

Sub-specialties: Tyres, Tools, Footwear, Packaging & manufacturing, Feature comparison

The specialty of marks covers a very wide area and encompasses many forms of examination. It includes a range of well-established evidence types including the comparison of marks made by footwear, tyres and tools.

The objective is to reach a view on whether or not a particular item was responsible for a specific mark. The examiner is concerned with visualisation, assessment and comparison of detail to interpret the findings.

Another area covered by this specialty is the examination of packaging and other manufactured items to determine the degree of association between items and to assess whether or not they were from the same original source. This includes examinations of extruded material such as plastic bags and film as well as items that are manufactured by other processes. The examiner studies various macroscopic and microscopic features to formulate an opinion.
