Drugs chemists deal with controlled substances. Their job is to identify and quantify drugs, discover their chemical make up and analyse their chemical impurities.

Their work involves deciding about bulk and trace samples, choosing the right way to analyse them, interpreting their findings and putting together different hypotheses. Where more than just drug evidence is involved, for example where packaging is part of the evidence, the work involves liaison with other practitioners such as specialists in Marks or Fingerprint examination.
